I'm trying to connect an xbox and a playstation (not at the same time)
to use the screen of an HP laptop (2317ca) like a monitor (university
residence doesn't leave much room for a tv).

Both games use a composite video/audio output through 3 RCA jacks.
I'm thinking of getting an expresscard tv tuner for the laptop, but
are the jacks on the expresscard, outputs to an external TV or inputs
I could use for the games?

Am I going about this the right way or is there a better approach?
TIA

You could indeed do this, but you would want to use the software that comes
with the tuner card rather than the Media Center. Media Center buffers the
incoming video signal to disk, then retrieves it from there for viewing, so
there's always a few seconds delay...this would kill your gaming response
time.

Card installed (HP Expresscard54), but it only came with drivers. Can
you recommend a site or software application that I can use to pipe
the signal to the screen without using Media Center? TIA

It should say in the specs for the card if they are inputs or outputs, from
the specs I found doing a Google search, it has antenna, S-Video, and
composite inputs. As Dana said you will cannot use media center for viewing
when gaming.
