1. You don't NEED an extender, but I think that works the best. I don't know
why you want other options outside of the 360 as an extender. It does the
best job. There are ones by linksys and HP. They don't do HD and are nearly
as expensive as the 360, and obviously don't play games.
2. If you are going to do the extender, all you need to run is CAT5e. You
should be able to run 50ft no problem. If you use the 360, all of the remote
stuff goes through it to access the MCE PC. Otherwise you need an IR blaster
system to send the signals to the computer.
3. If you want to record HDTV you need a tuner card and access to an OTA
antennae. I don't think recording through sat/cable box is supported yet.
It doesn't matter if you have a monitor attached. The signal would be sent
out through your TV out of your tuner card, or over ethernet if using an
extender.
Extenders really are awesome. I can watch an HDTV show through the 360 that
I "downloaded" while someone else is streaming music to another room in the
house through my old xbox, while a third person is sitting at the computer,
surfing the internet.
