Hi - I have an Audiovox XMT5600 with Windows Media Player. I can't seem to
create a playlist, or to download a playlist from Windows Media. Just to be
clear, I'm not talking about the songs in the playlist (which all show up in
my library just fine), but the actual playlist itself, so I don't have to
queue up songs, but can just select the playlist on my phone.

anybody have any idea how to create or transfer playlists? thanks!!

Couple of requirements first. You are using Pocket MP10 on the SMT5600, You
also need to be using Windows MP10 on your PC. You need to create the
playlists on your PC. Watch sizes as you are limited by the memory and flash
card on your phone.

Have the phone connected via USB AS to the PC, then go into the sync tab on
the PC. Check to make sure where you want to sync to is selected on the
right side.Go to set up sync and select 'Synchronize device automatically'.
Check the playlist(s) you wish to sync to the SMT in the window and let it
go. The music in those playlists will be transferred as well as the list.

You can't create a playlist on the Smartphone itself. If you drop a new
song into one of the sync'd lists or remove one, that will automatically be
reflected the next time you sync with Media Player.

The problem is, if your playlist contains more songs than will fit on your
device, Windows Media Player copies as many songs as possible to the device
but fails to copy the playlist itself. This behavior is VERY annoying and
should be changed. If a playlist on my PC contains 5GB of songs and my
device only has 1GB of space, then the first 1GB of songs should be copied to
the device and a playlist containing only the songs that fit should be
created on the device.

Even worse, if you are syncing multiple playlists in Media Player and even
ONE of them doesn't entirely fit, then NONE of the playlists are created on
the device. Not user friendly at all.

For the time being, the workaround is to limit the sizes of all of your
playlists. Of course, this makes the playlists useless for PC purposes
because on the PC you would want to hear ALL of your music, not just the
amount that will fit on your device. So, you're forced to create a duplicate
playlist for any playlist that you want on your device. That way, the
playlist on your PC can contain as many songs as you want, and the one for
your device will only contain the songs that fit.

I suppose you're correct that it would be better if the software
automatically created a playlist with the songs that fit on the device. But
is it really necessary or useful to have a 5GB playlist in the first
place??? that's at least 40-50 hours of music. Just divide it up into 8-10
hour chunks and your problem goes away.

I use auto-playlists rather than manual playlists. They provide the greatest
amount of flexibility when synchronizing music with devices. So, for
example, I have a playlist that contains all songs with a rating of 4 stars
or higher. Because of the size of my music collection, this playlist
contains several gigabytes of music. When I play this playlist on my PC, I
want it to to be able to access *any* of those songs. I shouldn't have to
add a size limitation to the playlist. Thus, my workaround has been to
create a duplicate auto-playlist that includes only the first 1GB of songs
with a 4-star or higher rating, and I sync this playlist with my device
instead.
