Again, not sure about smartphone, but this began with wmp10 (did you
upgrade?)
There are other media players which most users are opting for rather
than struggling with wmp's foibles, but, it you want some options to
continue with wmp, might take a look at

I'm dealing with it using modified playlists generated on the PC's wmp.
