It's normal to have multiple instances of svchost.exe.exe running.

A description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP Pro

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

Download and install Process Explorer from Microsoft. This will give
you information on the processes running under each instance of svchost.

It is not multiple copies of the same thing.
It is a host progam for many different groups of services.
In Vista it is easy to find out what is actually behind each svchost
entity.

On the Task Manger process tab right click on a svchost entry and
click 'go to service(s)' and you will be taken to the services tab but
you will see that a number of services are highlighted. Each of these
services in running in that given svchost entry.
