I did not choose to upgrade.

Upgrade is mandatory in order to use the WM5 development tools, so I had to.

Upgrading to AS 4.0 has more drawbacks than benefits for me, e.g. no TCP /
ethernet sync support anymore. But I have no choice, since the new dev
tools don't work with the old AS.

I'm just ennoyed by this message reminding me that MSFT wants me to use
Outlook.

I think AS should support Outlook Express, since it's an MSFT product.

Not entirely true - if you try to reply (by email) to a newsgroup post
from within OE, Outlook will pop up to do it, same with clicking on
any 'mailto:' links on websites etc - an inconvenience, as you have to
copy email address, close Outlook and go back to OE.
I also use Outlook for calendar, tasks, notes etc, but do not want to
use it for email (tried - didn't like it), but was force to set it as
default
for exactly same reason: AS 4.0 (unlike, what I gather is a majority
here, I was having some problems with AS 3.8 and none after
changing to AS 4.0 ...)

Outlook does not work natively with newsgroups. It use Outlook Express to
work with newsgroups. Outlook does not popup. You need to sort your setup.

so why isn't AS 4.0 happy when Outlook Express is the default mailer?

Outlook Express is a good mailer application, and it's a supported MSFT
product.

Really? Fascinating :)) Is that why I said "from within OE"

> Outlook does not popup. You need to sort your setup.

Thanks, and may I suggest that you need to try to actually read what is it
you attempting to reply to.
In both described cases the default mail program will be called to send
email.
