My friend puchased a used computer from a pawn shop.. ok It was loaded with
window xp media center, and worked perfectly. For reasons unknown, he
installed winxp os. Now it does not play sound, or music (error message=
atapi incompatible) and media player will auto detect the artist and list
the song titles but not play them. There is no sound card installed. The dvd
palyer reading media either. What possible actions are needed to fix this?

A complete clean install of some Operating System and the Motherboard
drivers required for all to the computers peripherals. Plus all of the
programs.

You say that there is no sound card installed, what about a integrated sound
chip on the motherboard.

In that case you must install the correct motherboard driver for the sound.

Go to the manufactures website and look for support for your model and
motherboard drivers.
You have not said what the brand of the computer is, so I don't know where
to send you to.
