You need space between the content border and the text - try padding of

With a narrow browser window, your text escapes out the bottom of the
pixel constraints of the grey box. Forget about using height.

The white on grey is a bit hard to read - needs more contrast.

Need vertical space between the menu items.

Consider switching to em units for margins/spacing etc instead of
pixels, so when a visitor increases text size, it doesn't overflow the
box. Use px only for borders 'n such.

"leftcol" will seem silly if your client decides next month s/he wants
the menu on the right. Use meaningful names, such as "menu".

Remove the cargo cult HTML comments from your JavaScript blocks, the
"<!--" and the "//-->". That hasn't been necessary since an early
release of .. what? .. Netscape 4.0?

Is there going to be something in the large, empty area to the right of
the "HUB" graphic?

HTML validates, but some css errors:

I'd like to see some bigger margins between the main text and the box
that contains it.

Also the left-side margin for the menu text.

All IMO:

Photo look odd to me, the face looks too blurred and the text half over it
doesn't help. Maybe it has more to do with the light then the out of

Due to testing something I had JS off, you might want to give something to
see (studio pics) for visitors who have the same issue :-)
Pics also look like they're scaled wrong (lot of jaggies)

Black above the text looks too empty
grey border is distracting
don't like the font, it looks too thin to me.

My 0.02:

The site doesn't look professional. You can see some cool designs in
specialized galleries. Go check some and review.

I can't judge the design completely because I don't know what the site
will be for... Black backgrounds are usually chosen by porn industry,
for example, see?

Perhaps some theory of colour can give you a hand.

They are. They are being resized by the browser. The actual image size
is different than what is being displayed on the page.
