Not really a web related, infact not at all a web related question ... but
as I'm posting here I thought you techie guys may be able to help.

I've also Googled for the answer and found loads of people in the same
situation, but no solutions :o(

I have a MSI K8N Neo-4 motherboard in my PC running XP Pro (32 bit) - use
the onboard sound (RealTekALX)

Now, windows sounds are not working (alerts etc), nor web site sounds (I
wana Pandora), nor WinDVD etc ... but the strange thing is that WinAMP does

Device Manager says all is fine
Latest drivers
Latest DirectX
Uninstalled all codecs
Latest windows updates

Any ideas? Really confusing me ...

Why? You need codecs.

If sound works on winamp, then it's probably an o/s config error. Make
sure your default record and playback devices are correct ( Control
Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio ). Winamp may bypass these
settings and use directsound drivers instead.

Because on many web sites/forums they said that the problem started after
codecs installed _ figured I'd get it working and add them again afterwards

Got fed up with it - disabled in BIOS and stuck a Sound Blaster in the PCI

Problem solved ;o)
