Re: What have I gotten myself into?
Hey Swamps, I see you need a hand, but I also see that ELS has come to your
rescue. If that don't do it, ping me.
But a word, it's easy to get some techniques down, it's easy to learn the
box model hacks & etc. (or at least, it probably will be for you), but CSS
is kind of like a layered attack: as you look at a design and want to code
it, you want to play certain cards first (like margin positioning) and hold
certain cards till last (like relative positioning) because each of the
cards has certain follow-up plays that you can make, but which might
exclude each other. The techniques aren't "reliable", they have lots of
unforeseen interactions at the browser level (yeah, I know, thanks for
telling you something you already knew).
All this "control" we brag about isn't OUR control over the technology, it's
the technology's ability to reach people if we use it well.
If you are on delivery schedule, just revert to tables for your layout and
let CSS handle the easy stuff like your font size/style. It will lighten up
your code considerably. Check your load times. But a customer job is no
place to learn. Too many pitfalls for the beginner. If you have a
conventional layout, I can provide templates (to the chagrin of the
Now in case anybody thinks I'm trying to come off on ELS's or Grey's level,
nothing could be farther from the truth. Even if my job entailed coding
every day, I doubt that I could attain the....purism of ELS or the
letter-perfect syntactical knowledge of Grey or for that matter, the expert
DOM manipulation of Koivi. I'm really just a project manager with
pretensions. When I'm convinced that the coders are telling me what's right
and I see this, I get on board and from now on it's shop policy.
But bro, if I can do it, you can do it. So it took me a year to derive a set
of standard templates, big deal, I almost never put my code on a client
site, I let the experts handle it. But I can make standards-based pages and
I know beyond a difference that you won't ever be sorry, because the
advantages will pay you and your customers bigtime. And your people.
Hang in there bro! Just wait till CSS3 comes along!
Now can somebody please tell me why I'm using sentence-caps all the sudden?
ah, i just had to hit the "nocaps" key. that feels much nicer. aaaaaaah.
nice. right there. trevor in his basement with his spiders and his cobwebs.
what a nice end to a nice story.
