Re: website suddenly slow! please help
If a database-driven site suddenly slows down for no apparent reason,
what's often the cause is that some of your commonly used tables are
getting too large. If you're storing continuously generated data (such
as logs or transaction records) in the database, consider archiving
older data to a table that doesn't get accessed regularly, so that the
commonly used tables stay small. Also, check your SQL structure, and
make sure that everything you regularly select against is indexed.
If you have shell access to the server, run 'top' and see if that
shows anything. It's also worth installing 'mytop' to get an insight
into what MySQL is doing. If you can't do that, then you can still get
a reasonable idea of what's going on by repeatedly refreshing the
"show processes" option in phpMyAdmin.
