I am going to need to produce a small "movie" for a site. First, if
this is not the appropriate group, what is? Second, if people know of
good books/tools/sites/etc. could they recommend them to me. TIA.
I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun.

Probably multiple options, but quicktime is a requirement. I don't
care if it is streaming or downloadable (I don't think) because I
don't care if it is copied. It is a demonstration of a product, not
anything "creative". I am pretty technical and mildly creative, but I
have never done any video at all, either production or presentation. I
am looking for a start on research.

QuickTime and Windows Media 7 are your best options. Both are fairly
easy to work with, and the latter is very good at narrowband streaming.
Avoid RealVideo at all costs.
The best (but not free) editing tool on the PC (IMO) is Adobe Premier

Have you considered Flash as a delivery method? It has the single best
video system out of everything, and it is cross-platform. FLV (Flash
video) is really simple to create - although you need Flash MX 2004 Pro
or Flash MX 2006 to produce the top end video stuff. The quality in
unbeatable, and only requires a very small player (which most people
already have, unlike Quicktime!)

Is there something free or cheap? This is going to be some reasonably
low end work. We are not going to make a feature film, just present
12-30 seconds of simple stuff.
I will see what my customer thinks. I have a baseless dislike of
Flash, but I can overcome that. As long as it runs on the Mac my
customer will be happy.
Do in order to understand.

Miranda is right on this. Flash is probably the way to go. It's cross-platform, the quality is better, the files are smaller (usually)
and most folks have it. RealVideo should be pooted into outer space.
Another really good (also not free) video editor for Windoze is Vegas, which is now owned by Sony I believe.
