In another thread I saw a couple folks recommend that one should use
different companies for DNR and hosting. Their answer may have been
specific to the OP's situation, but i'm wondering if that is indeed a
rule of thumb, and if so, what are the reasons?

Yes, it's a rule of thumb. It means if you have a falling out with your
hosting company, they can't hold your domain hostage.
Of course, the same is true with your registrar. But that happens less
