I am wondering about the feasability of operating separate sub-domains
of a singlebusy site across separate data centres.

Ideally, one should like to use Geo-location to redirect visitors to
appropriate sub-domains:

But that's expensive to implement in an efficient real-time manner.

I guess it's not possible to use speperate directories across

Or is it?

Shouldn't be too bad.  You only need to redirect them once, after all.
Once they're on the country-specific site all links just point to that site.

As for separate directories - yes, you could share directories across
the internet, but it could be a bit insecure.  If you want to do it that
way I'd recommend using a shared database.
