Hi - I am displaying Overture search results on my webpage but 」 signs
are displaying as ツ」.

Does anyone know of anything I can do to prevent this?

The search results appear to be returned as UTF-8.

Try setting the *document character set* of the web page to the same,
UTF-8 (and use character entities for any other non-ASCII characters on
the page (that *don't* come from the search results) so they don't get
misinterpreted as broken UTF-8).

'」' in ISO-8859-1 is hexadecimal A3, decimal 163, binary 10100011.
Encoding it in UTF-8 gives you     11000010 10100011, hex C2 A3.
with significant bits underlined:     ^^^^^   ^^^^^^
which would display as 'ツ」' if the document character set was
incorrectly set to ISO-8859-1.

If I understand the HTML standards correctly, including this tag as the
first <meta...> tag in the head of your page should do the job:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">

And lo, skinnybloke didst speak in alt.www.webmaster:

Overture is serving results to you in UTF-8 encoding, but the page on
which you are displaying them either has no encoding specified or is being
served in win-1251/ISO-8859-1.  Change the encoding of your results page
to UTF-8 and the ツ」 sign will display correctly.

You can either set up your webserver to serve your page with a UTF-8 HTTP
Content-type header:

Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8;

Or you can add the appropriate <meta> tag to the <head> section of your

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

pitfall corollary that nothing is ridiculous.

Re: 」 signs displaying as ツ」

Thanks for the replies guys.

The meta tag had it set to ISO-8859-1

I changed it to charset=UTF-8 and it works fine.
