password protecting a directory

I have some php forms I want to protect from the
general public. They are just for a memebrship to the
web site.

I am looking at some scripts (php) that use .htaccess and a database back
end which is what I want.

I tried some javascripts but they encode the
pages and then php wont work and others enable a user to just book mark
the pages and return again without being authenicated.

Before I spend hours or days (and you know what I mean)
going through different methods and scripts, I am wondering what other
people use or recommend. Another good tutorials on writing my own script?

I have the membership in a mysql database. I want then to be
able to access their userid/password automatically via a
form which sends them their info.

mod_auth_mysql (on SourceForge).  No PHP code needed; all handled between
.htaccess and mysql.

Take a look at Locked Area Lite - the free version is actually all most
of us need. You will see on the website whether the service will handle
everything you want now and in future.

Hope this helps.
