I don't know how long this has been happening, but it was a big surprise.

This morning, when I noticed that my refrigerator had died, I called one
of the phone numbers that a past service man had put on it.

It must have been an old number, because it this is what I got:

"AT&T - please hold for a selection of three similar businesses, and your
call will be transfered after the selection as the number you have called
has been disconnected.  Press 1 for ABC Martial Arts, press 2 for XYZ
Karate Studio..." I hung up at that point because none of the businesses
were refrigerator repair.

What ever happened to "the number you have reached has been disconnected
and there is no new number."  Even though the service is free for the
caller, I know AT&T is making money off of this. I guess some exercise
business must have had this number in the past, and my refrigerator must
be pretty old.

This may be a test base for a new push.
It still 'this number is no longer in service' comes up in my area.
At the end, do they say, we can connect you to the selected number for a
small charge?

I should come with a warning label.
