Simplest option would seem to be a better ftp client, with a friendlier
interface. There are plenty around - try Filezilla or Fireftp
ftp doesn't need a particularly sophisticated interface -- you should
only be doing simple tasks with it. If you find yourself needing
compelx file management, then ftp isn't the place to do it. Try
managing it locally, then simply replicating the local layout to the
far end (using ftp or rsync).
Don't build something with HTTP, use WebDAV if you must.
Don't build something, there's already plenty out there.
