On my website http://borealpictures.com on the About link I have some
thumbnail images of my art, that when clicked show the image in a new
browser window. But that is really annoying because the background
then is pure white, to much contrast with the artistic images (like
too much backlighting). Is there some way I could have the image
thumnail when clicked bring up the linked larger image in a smaller or
new window where I control the background color (maybe making the bg
color a gray or something)?

You can define the background colour for any page. Just link the
thumbnails to separate HTML pages (rather than binary images), which
then display the large image, and specify background colours etc for
the surrounding page.
