A page with a high PageRank will NOT always beat a page with a lower
PageRank in the rankings. Example: do a search for "search engine
seminars." The #1 site has a PageRank of 4. Depending on how the
rankings are going at the time, the #2 or #3 site (Jupiter Events) has
a PageRank of 8, an extremly high link popularity, and is the INDEX
page of the site. Yet, a gateway information page with a PageRank of 4
is beating it in the rankings -- out of around 1/2 million competitors
(again, depending on Google's index at the time).
Special Notes about PageRank
PageRank is almost completely dependent upon links pointing to your
site, reduced, to some degree, by the total number of links to other
sites on that page.
