OK - I have a good idea of everyone's opinion, so I don't need that (as
if that's going to stop anyone) ;)
I was wondering if anyone has any GOOD insight or information on the
REAL level of market penetration of Flash player? Last time I tried a
Google search, I mostly got Macromedia's obviously biased results
(which claims something over 90%). I'm wondering if you know anything
different, or know about any more reliable information sources?
And, yes, I do know the problems of trying to collect any sort of
browser statistics - I'm just looking for more information.
Re: Flash market penetration
Given the Flash player is shipped with Windows, you can assume almost
100% of Windows IE users have it, unless they have deliberately removed
it. So that's circa 85% of people right away. It's harder to guess if
you're talking about "recent" versions of the Flash player. The
percentage is high enough to not really worry too much if the end user
can support it or not though, so long as you provide alternative
content or at least a link to download the right player version.
Something to think about though - next year Windows Vista is out and I
really doubt the player will ship with it or IE 7 as Microsoft now have
their own competing technology. So without all those "default"
installations, and something to compete again, I think Flash's share
will SHRINK next year, personally :|
