Some companies offer domain forwarding and masking for free with domain
registration (which is about $10 / year - much cheaper than web hosting).

I'm wondering if I'll be able to mask a URL like  with ?

Do I understand correctly that domain forwarding happens on the HTTP level,
while domain masking on the DNS level? (If so, the above masking is
impossible, right?

No - masking and forwarding are often the same thing, only with a frame
