display: inline-block

I frequently have to display rows of "blocks". For example:
thumbnails of images or product descriptions. Usually I float these left
so that the "blocks" can use up as much browser width as desired.

That has it's pitfalls, of course. So, what is the support level of
display: inline-block?  How about a hack for non-compliant browsers?
Seems regular old display: inline might be a useable but "illegal" trick.

Seems like so much of web design is waiting for old browsers to die
and for proper CSS support to be widespread. Of course there's still
people using font tags and probably others writing for NS4!
