Hello, a friend told me that .COM sites are preferred by search
engines... is it true?

Don't see why they should be, but I'm speaking as an outsider so await
other's input.

What I think is reasonable to say is that .com sites are (probably)
preferred by visitors. If someone remembers the name of the site but not
whether it was .com or .co.uk or dot whatever, its likely that they would
try .com first. (I do.) I've not seen any empirical studies but if you had
two domains say example.com and example.co.uk then I would expect the .com
one to attract slightly more visitors.

Just my opinions of course ...

Local search engines prefer local domains (.co.uk, .gov.uk, .fr &c.)
however, as Brian has mentioned users tend to prefer .com domains.

What is companyx's web site? People tend to guess at 'companyx.com'
rather than 'companyx.it'
