Apache- redirect directory to different port?

OK - maybe not.

I want to be able to send requests to a specific virtual directory to a
different port, but without actually redirecting (so that the other port
processes the request, but it remains served on port 80). Is this
possible using Apache 2?

A bit more concrete:

http://www.example.com/newport /
will be sent to
http://www.example.com:8080 /
but will still be read by the browser as
http://www.example.com/newport /

As asked above - is this even possible?

Yes, that can be done with mod_proxy.

See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_proxy.html for the
details. It's not particularly complex.
