I talked to Dell about getting a laptop and when selecting the OS, they
suggested that I should get Windows XP because it's more stable. Does anyone
get this kind of suggestion? Their suggestion seems interesting because if
they think XP is more stable, why do they carry Vista?

My guess would be, for those that want it.

I would not agree that XP is more stable, but I'd bet that from their
perspective they have a LOT fewer support calls from XP customers than
from Vista customers. There are issues with Vista, including hardware
drivers, compatible applications software and users that are unfamiliar
with it (and compared to XP, that means all of us), but I have not found
Vista to be unstable, per se.

I have a printer/scanner that will not work with vista, no drivers and there
will not be any.
