I have Windows XP version 5.1. Is there a way to make a vertical photograph
full height as a desktop background without stretching it? Very frustrating
to have a some wonderful photos and not be able to use it as a desktop
without distortion or major cropping. Any help would be appreciated.

Short answer, No.

Long answer, you can crop and resize the photo to fit a horizontal 4:3
format. As long as you keep the aspect ratio, you can crop and resize all
you want to without distorting the image.

But you must crop to get it to fit.

You can resize to make the long size fit the vertical pixels of the
desktop, which will leave bars on the left and right of the screen.

You may need a photo/image editor to crop the photo to a resolution
of 800 x 600 pixels.

CSM1 and S.Sengupta:
thanks for both insights. Both are helpful. After realizing that there is
no simple way to select a vertical picture for my desktop without distorting
it, I took your last comment, CSM1, and opened a copy of my photo in Paint,
expanded the white 'bar' to the left and right of the vertical so that it
then was the proper ratio for a horizontal, full-frame photo [4:3,
width:height]. Then all I had to do was to 'paint' the white as black and,
voila, I had what I needed, a full-height vertical photo, without distortion,
centered on my screen with a black panel or bar on each side.

It took a couple of minutes to modify it but it was worth the effort. Sure
hope MS adds this as an automatic feature to the 'center/tile/stretch'
options they have now. I won't even charge them for the idea. I'm really
surprised they hadn't done it already.

Thanks for your help and encouragement to experiment.
