I was wondering if there is a way to use an external monitor as a
separate screen so I can keep on program on one screen and work on the
laptop on another. Sometimes I need to view information in one program
and input in another and I'm constantly having to shrink both windows.
Is there a way to use an external monitor while still working on a
laptop or is my choice one or the other?

Easy to do just what you're asking.

Connect the second display to the laptop's external connection.

Display Properties, Settings. Click on the second monitor, select Extend my
Windows Desktop onto this Monitor.

Of course, what Val failed to mention was that this only works if the laptop
is fitted with a dual head graphics processor. Virtually every modern
laptop is, but older ones may vary.
