I have a DELL Inspiron 6000 with CD RW/DVD Combo.
What would it take to upgarde it to DVD burner (i.e., DVD+/- with double
layer write capability).

Should I get it done with dell, or shops like Future shop/bestbuy do it.

Isn't that drive in the front media bay? Buy one on eBay, install
yourself and sell the 'old' one the same way.

Basically, just change the drive. Where the problem comes in, usually,
is in the drive bezel (door). Most of them are custom and not generic,
and you may have any number of cosmetic and or operational problems (in
the worst case it won't work at all, the door won't be able to close
fully). Sometimes it's easy. More often, it's a nightmare, especially
if you care about aesthetics, cosmetics and things like color matching.

As an alternative, you may consider simply adding an external DVD
burner and leaving the laptop as is. Unless you need to burn while on
the road, this will prove an easier solution than trying to cope with
the details that Barry points out. Also easier to upgrade in the
future, or, should you wish to dispose of the 6000 you will still have
your burner. Works either way.

Thanks for the replies.
Do you have any idea how much it would roughly cost me to buy an external
DVD writer. I may pick it in this holiday season.
