I believe it's possible, but unless you have a device that requires AS 4.x,
I think the general consensus is that you're better off stopping the
upgrades at 3.8. Going to 4.x removes features and seems to add
frustration/issues. The most likely reason you need 4.x is because you've
got a Windows Mobile 5 device.

Of course it is.
But the question is : do you need it?
If you only have WM2003 machine(s) you should stay with ActiveSync
3.8.

Thank you.
Very helpful advices.

Since some weeks I am experimenting with a quite new MDA Vario from T-Mobile
with WM5 and AS4.2 and with ISA2004, E2K3SP2 and Exchange 2003 ActiveSync,
SSL and these things.
Now a user appeared with an older MDA III with AS3.7 and my first attempt to
get this one configured the same way failed. So I thought it might me good to
upgrade ActiveSync.

But now seeing your answers I remember some problems I still have concerning
sync via USB. I asked for this received an answer that suggested to go back
to 3.7 or something likely. But I did not want to do so.

Regards Thomas

A WM2003 user should stay with AS3.x, but this does not mean that it
is not possible to synchronize with AS4.2. In this case, he cannot
backup (option was removed) or synchronize by WiFi any more.

I have several Pocket PC, from the original Pocket PC 2000 to WM5, and
because of the latter, I had to upgrade to 4.x. But I still can
synchronize everything. And in fact, more recent builds of AS are
improved as far as USB drivers are concerned.
