Hi,
This problem just drives me crazy: i have searched the net, and found a lot
of the same solutions, but none of them helped. I hope there's someone on
this newsgroup who can help me/
I have a second-hand HP Ipaq 5450 / laptop with XP/SP2. Ipaq still works
fine on the PC of the former owner.
Was so stupid to connect ipaq before installing ActiveSync 3.8 --> unknown
device listed under USB-devices
Here's what I tried so far ( numerous times):
- in driver manager, uninstalled unknown device (both in safe mode en normal
mode); uninstalled activesync, rebooted, installed activesync en followed
the right procedure. I still get the 'unknown device'
- manually copied wceusbsh.inf, wceusbsh.cat and acmeusbsh.inf from the
/activesync-folder to windows/inf and wceusbsh.sys to
windos/system32/drivers, then uninstalled, reinstalled etc. Didn't help
either
- uninstalled USB hubs, controllers and 'unknown device' and reinstalled
again... didn't help either.
- activesync is under the exception list for windows firewall, so that is
not the cause neither
Thx a lot in advance,
marianne

Hi Marianne,
Could it be a case of a faulty USB cradle? If you have access to another
computer try to setup a partnership on it to test if the fault is with the
cradle.

Please log in for more thread options Hi
Don't know it you have fixed it yet but I had a problem with my ipaq
hp5550 suddenly coming up with an unknown device error, having tried
soft reset, hard reset, uninstalling USB driver, installing USB
drivers, you name it I tried it. I had a second pc and it also
wouldn't recognise it, which I had read happened to someone else.
Luckily for me I had a USB cable which I used when I left my cradle @
home. So I thought I would try it, I had nothing to lose, to my
surprise it worked. So there was nothing wrong with my pda J. I found
both my pc connect ok as before on my USB cable. After thinking about
it clicked it must be the connection in the cradle where my pda sits.
So I tried putting my pda in the cradle and holding it in various
positions found it worked only when held in a certain position, meaning
it wasn't seated correctly. In my case the problem is from just
pulling it out without using the release button round the back. I
don't know if it can be fixed. So if your pda suddenly isn't
recognised by your pc and you've done the active sync update route
and drivers etc. try a different USB connection, (N.B. trying the
serial cable route with the cable won't work if it's your cradle).
