I'm the one that first mentioned Windows Installer Clean Up as a possible
solution but was afraid to try it for fear of making a bad thing even worse.
But I threw caution to the wind and ran it a few days ago, essentially
following the same steps which Killjoy333 outlined, including going to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSNAPPS and deleting.
Then I went to Control Panel/Add-Remove, this time it was a clean uninstall.
Using CCleaner, a free software aka Crap Cleaner, I was able to selectively
remove a bunch of unnecessary items from Startup, much as you would do in
MSConfig but simpler.
I did not think of turning off the 3'rd party browser and apparently since
my problem is completely solved, I think that others will find their way out
of this mess and leave MSN Search Toolbar/Desktop Search as good lessons not
to be repeated.
Thanks to all of you who lended a hand.
