It's a very old laptop, so it's going to be slow by today's standards.
Not much you can do about that, it's a Celeron (I think), and an older
one at that.
It's also very possible that the CPU cooling system is clogged with
dust, hair, dirt, etc. Many laptops need to have the CPU cooling system
cleaned fairly regularly (about every 6 months is not uncommon, but it
depends on where and how much it's used). While this can be done to
some extent from outside, to really do a good job requires partial
disassembly. This is a very likely cause of the laptop switching itself
off ... it may be overheating.
