I am looking for a software solution that I could use to piece
together a
mosaic picture from 12 pictures with a little overlap on sides.

also, what is good keywords to search on the web regarding this topic?

 I think there was one
I played with a few years ago
that's called photostitch.
Just search for stitchers and
there should be some freeware you
can get.
If your savvy then you
might try a torrent.

Look for Helmut Dersch's PanoTools and/or just search for Panorama.
