i recently bought a dell inspiron which came preloaded with XP MCE...turns
out my m-audio preamp will not work with MCE...(M-audio says MCE doesn't
support thrid-party sound devices, MS says M-audio won't update drivers...i
don't care, i just want to record)

if I go and buy a full version of XP pro, can i get rid of MCE, load XP and
have it run, or is my laptop rigged so MCE is the only OS that will work?
does MS offer a 'downgrade' from MCE to plain ol' XP or XP pro.

First off, MCE *is* XP Pro underneath, so it is odd that your preamp doesn't
work. What exactly is the problem; do the drivers not even load because they
say it is not a supported OS and have you tried installing the regular XP
Pro drivers?

As far as changing it to Pro, your system should run Pro just fine, MCE has
more stringent specs than Pro. There isn't a way to upgrade, downgrade,
sidegrade, whatever to Pro, you would need to do a fresh install of Pro on
to your system. Make sure you have any data and pertinent drivers backed up
first.

No, they're completely separate operating systems, and the only possible way
to move between them is to do a clean install. I think M Audio's explanation
doesn't hold water, as (from a sound driver point of view) it should be
identical to XP Pro. It may be possible to change a registry setting
somewhere and make Media Center think it was Pro, long enough to install the
drivers. I bet they would actually work if the install program would assume
MCE = XP Pro...
