I have XP Media Center, and would like to chop some MP3's into smaller pieces
to fit my media. Can anyone suggest a safe free download of a simple Mp3
editor?

I'd normally suggest MediaMonkey but if all your after is splitting mp3s
then you could google MEDA-MP3-SPLITTER-INSTALL.

Audacity is the best free audio editor on the planet.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audacity works on mp3 if you also install the Lame mp3 encoder.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3

Works very well.

I found it, downloaded it, and tried it. Worked just fine, and easy to use. I
got confused for a minute, re the LAME, but figured it out okay. Thanks a ton.

You are welcome.

The LAME encoder install is not the most institutive. But once installed it
really works well.
I have been recoding mp3s at 160 kbps with no problems.
