intent being to allow secure mapping of network drives? My guess is it
would present to much overhead?

It should only be necessary to use port 139. I've tested variants of
the following on both NT and XP.
XP can add a loopback adapter without needing a reboot or installation
media. However, be sure to go into the Adanced TCP/IP properties and
disable NetBIOS under the WINS tab.
Instead of using 126.96.36.199 on the loopback adapter, I use a
number in the APIPA range, that is 169.254.x.x. Maybe it would be
better to use a number in the "test net" range: 192.0.2.0.
