I have ssh and sftp.  Someone who logs in with ftp
can, for example, do cd .. and get out of the space
for that user.  I would like to block this, so
an ftp client can only access data in the
target account.  Can this be done?

There are published chroot cages for OpenSSH at sourceforge.net for exactly
this purpose. However, if all they need to do is browse and install or
download files, I highly recommend using HTTPS and WebDAV, so that the
funcationality is built into the web clients of most OS's you might
encounter (such as Konqueror for Linux and Network Neighborhood setups for
