You need to install the zlib-devel package (and possibly the
openssl-devel and pam-devel packages too).

I got past the zlib error by installing it again, now I am missing
OpenSSL stuff per your prediction (thank you).

I had already tried updating the openssl package (still cannont find)
but not with the openssl-devel pagackage -- whadyaknow, that did it!
