that uses an RSA modulus of 512. I get the following message when I run
ssh_rsa_verify: RSA modulus too small: 512 < minimum 768 bits
key_verify failed for server_host_key
I can't change the SSH server. How can I change the client to work with 512

I've never tried this but you could try changing this line in ssh.h:
#define SSH_RSA_MINIMUM_MODULUS_SIZE 768
