I've successfully connected to SSH servers through a NIS firewall with
PuTTY. If you just want to allow connections to normal SSH servers, a
rule for TCP port 22 (all hosts) should suffice.
(In fact IIRC the version of NIS I was using (2003?) actually had an
autoconfiguration rule for PuTTY.)
