Slowly but surely progress is being made! :)  I have another question
regarding the addition of keys into the .etc/authorized_keys file.  If
the file doesn't pre-exist, I don't have any problems creating it by

# ssh dave@ "cat $/.ssh/single_use_identity >> $

However, if that file already exists, I always get a 'permission
denied' error message.  I've even changed the permissions to 777 (from
600) and it still has the problem!

dev_pc:~/.ssh$ ls -al /shares/dave/.ssh/
total 384
drwx------ 3 dave share 65536 2011-05-18 10:09 .
drwxr-x--- 4 dave share 65536 2011-05-17 18:51 ..
-rwxrwxrwx 1 dave share   602 2011-05-18 10:09 authorized_keys
drwxr-xr-x 2 dave share 65536 2011-05-05 10:06 backup
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave share   602 2011-05-18 10:05 single_use_identity
