thats basically it...i just bought a laptop off of my friend...he had
never used headphones with it...it is a compaq r3240us...so whenever
i plug in headphones, the sound still comes out of the comp
speakers....im pretty good with computers and have messed with the
sound settings and everything and i cannot find out whats wrong...i
just put windows corporate edition on the comp, if you think that
might be a reason for it? any ideas?

It's not a given that anything is wrong, or that plugging in the
headphones is SUPPOSED to cut off the speakers. Some systems work this
way, but others don't.

Try another set of headphones.

It could be that the jack is not long enough or the right shape on the
end to mechanically disconnect the speaker.

Other than that the switch may be faulty.

Did it work BEFORE you reimaged it ? You installed corporate edition of
... what ?
How about checking to be sure correct drivers.

BEFORE you call - use THEIR software as it may very well be related to
bios/drivers. If you call and say - "I'm not using your software, I
stole a copy of the Corporate edition from the office" - he'll hang
up - not his problem.
