I want a compact windows smartphone that will work on Verizon. I am
currently happy with my GSM audiovox smt-5600, but I'd prefer to
switch to verizon since I'm having coverage problems at 2 locations
where I need the phone most, and most of my frequent contacts are on
verizon.
I'm open to a non-windows phone but the OS must support audio players
that will play most streaming audio formats. (tcpmp, windows media
player, real player, or equivalent) Palm may be the only current
candidate. Linux? Symbian? Maybe someday?
I don't want a QWERTY keyboard, but I do want numeric keys with T9.
T9 works great for the limited amount of typing I do. I'm not keen on
using a stylus. A big screen isn't that important either, 176 x 220
is enough. EV-DO would be nice, and I would pay for it, but i really
only need about 30 k/sec to meet my needs. I want SD, mini-SD or
micro SD storage mostly for mp3s.
For now i seem to have 2 choices, buy a phone that is TOO BIG and
probably too fragile, or buy an evdo phone, like samsung sch-a950,
motorola e815, or lg vx-8100 and learn how to hack it to connect by
bluetooth to a pocket pc or laptop so i can listen to world news while
commuting. Hacking seem files does not appeal to me. Why won't
verizon sell me a smartphone that I can carry in my pocket without
risking castration, or breaking the phone?
I will probably stay with my current carrier and phone, but am
considering:
moto q, (still a mystery)
xv6700 (fragile?)
xv6660 (is a price drop coming?)
treo 700w (overpriced?) or 650 (no evdo)
samsung i730 (keyboard illegible and weak battery life?)
all respectable devices, but i don't want to carry something that big
in my pocket for two years.
The blackberry 7130e is a better form factor, but i don't think it
will play the streaming audio formats that i want to listen to. It
seems to be a messaging and email device.
The samsung i600 looked good on paper. Add an EV-DO upgrade and it
would be a very useful phone. For some reason Verizon dropped it and
also the i700 (Add number keys and evdo). Power to the pocket PC's,
but why not sell a compact smartphone too?
Must I wait and pay a high price for a LARGE QWERTY device that
probably wont make me happy? I want a phone first and a device that
can stream windows media player and TCPMP second.
