Two things come to mind here
1. protect the boot sequence with a cmos password
2. prevent physical access to the inside of computer. All the intruder has
to do is move the hard drive to another machine, or jumper it as slave and
boot from their own hard drive.
It would be really interesting to see what xp does when it tries to find
drivers for all the 'new' devices it sees, but theoretically it is
'possible' to boot either way.
