To which extent does Google know grammar?

I am from Germany. Here we have some special characters, the so called
"Umlaute". These are one of the vocals "aou" with two dots on top of it.

When searching in Google, it seems as if Google knows that "umlaut-a" is the
same as "ae".

However, it seems as if Google differentiates between the singular and the
plural form of a noun. And variations of a noun or a verb also seem be to
regarded as different by Google.

Does Google know language specific grammar rules? Are these documented?
