I noticed a high-ranking competitor with some extra charatcors in the title
tag. The title starts with:


I'm not an HTML expert and wasn't aware of any title attributes. That text
is not displayed in google searches. Anyone know what that text does and
what effect it may have on ranking?

It's an ISO character for a question mark ? Never saw that one done

This is a solid triangular arrow symbol.

Google has sometimes dropped these and other eye candy symbols from title

These codes can cause problems in IE - not displaying the title in title

I wonder what ISO charactors are doing in the title? Perhaps some search
engines will display ASCII code, giving the appearance of an enhanced

Since pages with that test are sometimes ranked above me I think it is safe
to say that it does not harm google rankings.

Perhaps google only supresses certain ASCII charactors in the title tag, the
arrow being one of them.
