Okay now add anything you like after the .com and it still comes up fine
and not as a 404, here's an example:

I used to do that, but people started linking to some of these
bogus pages (usually spelling variations of the real ones) and
Google started returning them in the results. That seemed like
a risky thing from a SEO standpoint, so I turned it off.
