Look at the title of a page as if it were the title of a book in a
library and you standig in front of the book shelve.
If the title doesn't describe what is in the book, how would you find it?

The title element (it's not a meta tag) is very important, you would
ideally start with one phrase per page. So a product page selling
Green Football Boots would have a title-
Green Football Boots
It really is that simple. Ignore all the number of characters stuff,
just copy the product name as the title. Long term you can think about
adapting the title to attract more traffic (add a couple of other
important words), but for now the product name should be your starting
The meta keyword tag is ignored by Google and given little ranking
power from other search engines, so it's not that important. What I do
is repeat the title in the meta keywords tag (so they are the same).
So I tend to have short titles and short meta keywords tags.
Probably beyond your ability, but you could probably edit Zen Cart to
do this automatically for you (I've done this with plenty of other
scripts, saves loads of time).
The description meta tag doesn't form part of the rankings algorithm,
but it might be shown as your search engine listing, so add something
sales like (something visitors will click on). If you are pushed for
time with a large site (thousands of products) use the same
description for every page with the product name incorporated. Not the
ideal solution, but it's quick and better than nothing (whatever you
do with it, it won't increase rankings, only click thrus on your

your time. Links and content is where SEO is today and you lack links
so that is where your time should go right now.
