Hi guys

Suppose I made a web page targetting "recruitment software". It seems to
me that the best thing to put between the <title> tags is "Recruitment
Software" but a collegue reckons this is frowned upon by the search
engines because _too much_ of the title is keywords, and that I should
make it more specific like "xyz recruitment software - xyz software Inc."

Is there any truth in this?

If the page is about recruitment software then it should be in the Title
element. The Title is not a tag BTW, just some general info for you. It
belongs in between the head element along with the meta data that people
refer commonly as tags. So meta data is tags and not the Title. The phrase
should be in the description also and for GP's the keywords. Yahoo uses the
description in the indexes so you will want to put this in the meta data.

You have to remember that the opinions we give here are based on past
experience. That experience, especially since we're in the middle of a
big weird Google update, could be being overtaken by events as I
write. That said, I think you'll be ok with "recruitment software"
alone as the title.
